Undrafted New York Knicks folk hero, John Starks wasn’t known as the brightest light in The Garden.
But according to Don Nelson, the guard was as smart as a bag of rocks.
One faithful night while coaching the Knicks during the lockout-shortened 1995-96 season, Nellie witnessed an interaction between a fan and Starks that made him immediately want to trade the beloved half-wit.
As the story goes, a fan innocently went up to Starks after a game and asked him to sign a pennant for his brother who is an even bigger Knicks fan than himself.
The fan said his brother’s name was Marc…with a “C” and to make the autograph out to him. Upon getting the pennant back, sure enough, it had Stark’s autograph on it. But it was made out to Cark…with a “C”😑
Word has it, whenever Nellie told this story, he would always preface it with “this is how stupid John Starks is.”
