Oak Hill Academy and UNC Tar Heel alumni Ty Lawson has always had a knack for controversy. Ever since going on a booze-fueled joyride with a suspended license during his junior year of uni.
So when news broke about his lifetime ban from the Chinese Basketball Association over some Chinese Cakes, I was not surprised.
Lane Usage Violation Lawson
The first thing I want to get out of the way is that Ty Lawson wasn’t always a fuck-up.
Despite his illegal midget stature of 5’11 by basketball standards, I first heard his name in high school because he played for the national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy. There he averaged 24 points, 9 assists, and five steals as an All-American.
His name kept ringing bells at the collegiate level, helping the Tar Heels claim the 2009 NCAA Division I Championship.
After getting drafted, he steered clear of the law during his first few years in the NBA, stacked his bread, and balled out on the court. But his old mischievous ways finally caught up to him in 2015.
In January of that year, he was charged with driving while impaired in another car-related slip-up, causing his teammates to give him the nickname Fast & Furious Lawson.
He was also cited for a lane usage violation after leaving a party in Denver. Straight gangster😎
Chinese Cakes Are a Good Thing
Fast forward to 2020 and Ty is now playing for the Fujian Sturgeons of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) after bottoming out of the NBA with the Sacramento Kings.
This Instagram post from what looks like a gentleman’s establishment got him in a deep-fried dish of trouble.
The post caused the Sturgeons to come out and issue a public statement on the matter saying:
“His inappropriate words are inconsistent with the social responsibilities and values abided by the club. We will not sign him for the new season.”
Apparently, the Chinese aren’t familiar with the indearing American slang for a phat ass. Either that or they just don’t like cake.
