Athletes have been finding themselves in personal entanglements since the time of Marn Grook.
Charles Oakley and Jeff McInnis are no different, after ending up in a love triangle with the same woman in the early 2000s.
Laid up in the Shack
If two guys end up throwing hands, the root cause is usually either money or a woman.
In this particular case, it was the latter.
As the story goes, Oak was seeing this sweet young thang down in Charlotte, North Carolina, which also happens to be Jeff’s hometown.
So Jeff and Oak’s girl were acquainted and she must have had a big ol’ hippopotamus booty or something because he developed a thing for her too.
Hoping to talk to his crush, McInnis called shorty’s crib one night (remember this all went down in the summer of 2000 when home phones were still a thing) and Oakley just so happened to be laid up in her shack at that exact moment.
I’m gonna hit him with a one-piece, no sides
If you followed the NBA at all in the 80s and 90s, you’d know Charles Oakley was not to be messed with.
A hard-nosed, no-nonsense old school type, his memoir was aptly titled ‘The Last Enforcer‘ because he would gladly go upside the head of any foo’ that he felt did him wrong.
Jeff McInnis became just one more in a long line of such foos after his faithful phone call to Felicia’s house that night.
Oakley apparently drove around looking for him that very same night after he got on the phone and warned McInnis that he was going to “hit him with a one-piece, no sides” the next time they crossed paths.
Slugged at morning shoot-around
Eventually, the two finally caught up when Oakley’s Toronto Raptors played Jeff McInnis’ LA Clippers in an early December 2000 game.
True to his word, Oak walks right up to McInnis as soon the Clips morning shoot-around session was over and proceeded to slug him straight in the face with a mean right hook that bore an oversized ring.
After this, Oakley casually walked to the opposite end of the court, practiced shooting some free throws, and said all he wants to do is play some basketball. Legend!
